Sasha Soundlab: Training NOW Available

The latest product to be available for training at Paul Nolan Sound is Sasha Soundlab, created with Sasha in conjunction with Audio Raiders.

The Soundlab, through the use of the Free Native Instruments Kontakt Player, allows you to dig deep into the archives of some of Sasha's most well known, signature sounds, from albums such as Involver, Invol2ver and Airdrawndagger.

The interface gives you the tools, control and power to harness these sounds, twist, mangle and re-design them to make them your own, making it perfect as a starting point for Sound Design, original productions and remixing. Indeed, i have already found this instrument extremely effective for Film Music styles too.

Let me go in depth with you within this remarkable tool, where you will learn how to:

  • Load and Install Sasha Soundlab
  • The Kontakt Player interface
  • Sample Instrument Structure & Menu Hierarchy
  • Keyboard Structure, layout and Colour Coding
  • Loading Sample Instruments
  • Use the on-board Convolution Reverb and Delay effects
  • Triggering Samples using the Latch Control
  • Re-sequencing loops and samples, both onboard using Sasha Soundlab Drum/ Glitch Machine, and in your favourite DAW (Live, Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase)
  • Layering Sounds using multiple instruments in the same instance of Kontakt Player
  • Unleashing the power of Multi FX using Midi Controller Assignments and Midi Keyswitches
  • Arranging tracks using Sasha Soundlab
  • Sound Design using Sasha Soundlab
  • Applying Sasha Soundlab to your own productions
  • Using Multi instruments to their full potential

For Sasha Soundlab to have such in - depth features takes it way beyond just a mere library of loops and hits: it becomes an instrument in its own right, packed with nuance and fine controls that will enhance almost any production.

Training courses, which include 6 hours of training in Sasha Soundlab are available for £150 in both 1-2-1 and Skype Training formats, meaning you can get the knowledge you need, wherever you are. As part of this package you will also receive Screen Captured Video Tutorials of each and every session, meaning you have a personalised training resource to go back to again and again.

Also, stay on the look out for video tutorials on Sasha Soundlab coming soon!

Short Film 'Something Wrong' Achieves Official Selection at NFFTY

Here's an update on short film Something Wrong, which I provided sound design and final mixing for.

Recently it has been selected for NFFTY, the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle USA.

NFFTY is the largest and most influential youth film festival in the world. In 2011, it screened 225 films from the best filmmakers 22 and younger representing 40 states and 20 countries. NFFTY 2012 (April 26-29) will be even bigger, with over 10,000 expected in attendance.

It's great that this film and it's talented cast has been getting so much exposure on the festival circuit. It has also been attracting awards, with an En Primeur award for Best Cast, in which it managed to beat over 5,000 other films!

Always find it fascinating that when my job on a film finished, it's life only just begins.

New Product: Direct Advice Videos

Direct Video Advice Sample from Paul Nolan on Vimeo.

Today I am launching a new product, Direct Advice Videos.

This product is perfect for anyone who needs good creative and technical advice, if you have hit the wall creatively, or if you can't get your productions to have that Pro sound and need a push in the right direction.

This is how it works:

1. You send your track, zipped in a compressed format, to me via DropBox or other sharing link.

You need to send not just a bounced audio file of the track, but the whole session, including all audio files.

I support the following DAWs:

Logic Pro
Pro Tools
Ableton Live
Reason
Cubase

2. I will open your session, and build a hitlist of areas where the track requires improvements.

3. I will work on your session for 1hr, and I will record this session using Screen Capturing software. I will explain at every stage where the track requires improvement, what techniques I am using to improve the track.

Also, I will explain WHY I am using the techniques I am, therefore giving you context and a deeper understanding on how to produce your own tracks in future.

4. I will deliver the session back to you, with improvements made so you can see for yourself the advice applied.

I will also supply the 1hr Screen Captured video of the session in .mov format

All audio from the session is recorded and can be clearly heard in the video, as well as my voice.

All keyboard shortcuts and mouse clicks are also recorded, giving you the full benefit of the work done on your track.

All this costs £20 for one 1hr video. This is perfect if you need advice quickly, or require new techniques to get you moving.

Another big benefit is that it is a personalised service, tailored to you creative goals and learning needs.

If you are interested in purchasing a Direct Advice Video, please contact me via email paul.nolan@mac.com or use the Contact form on the website.

Announcing W Hotels DJ Lab Bali July 2012

I'm delighted to announce my participation in the W Hotels / Burn Studios DJ Lab 2012.

I first worked with W Hotels during their DJ Lab in 2011 as part of Burn Studios Ibiza Residency for the summer, working alongside KCRW LA Music Director Jason Bentley, legendary producers Arthur Baker and Cassius, as well as W Hotels Global Music Director Michaelangelo L'Acqua to deliver masterclass lectures on Music Production & Sound Design to a group of talented and up and coming DJs doing great things in the Dance Music scene globally.

As part of the 2012 programme, myself, Michaelangelo, Jason Bentley, Rob Garza from legendary DJ / Production outfit Thievery Corporation and a brand new set of emerging talents will come together in Bali to learn, develop talent and share amazing experiences to enhance the next generation of musical talent.

This will take the form of a 3-4 day programme of events, where the participants will learn crucial Production & Audio Engineering skills, to help them create or finish their own productions and get them out onto the dancefloors of the world.

See below for the full press release, and of course I'll be blogging about this in the run up to and during the events, so keep checking the blog for more details...

I'm happy to announce that April 7th represents the first event of my new residency in London at KODE, held at the Lane Bar, Brick Lane...

Stay tuned for more information for the April 7th gig, and for an exclusive KODEcast podcast mix to give you a flavour of what to expect on the night...

Heavyocity DAMAGE Training Now Available!

I'm always looking for ways to offer new and innovative training solutions for music producers, including some of those tools that 'traditional' and even online music schools wouldn't consider.

Which is why I'm pleased to announce that Paul Nolan Sound now offers a full training solution on Heavyocity Media's sensational new instrument Damage

Damage is housed within the Native Instruments Kontakt 5 environment, and can be used with either the full version of NI's landmark sampler, or can also be used within the free Kontakt 5 Player, which you can download from the Native Instruments website

Based on extreme sound design and aimed predominantly at the film composition market, it's 30GB library of hits, loops, effects and the extraordinary 'Punish' button (which combines elements of overdrive, compression, EQ & maximisation to really beef up any loop, hit or sound), can also be used in various forms of electronic and Pop Music, as well as be complete re-sequenced and manipulated using Damage's flexible on board tools, or triggered via any MIDI controller keyboard.

The highlights of the training on offer include:

  • Introduction to Kontakt 5 environment
  • Installing Damage onto your system
  • Adding the Damage Library to Kontakt 5
  • Navigating the Damage Library
  • Loading Instruments
  • Manipulating multiple instances of Damage in the same Kontakt plugin using multiple MIDI channels in your DAW / on your MIDI Controller Keyboard
  • Triggering loops from the comprehensive Loop Menus
  • Manipulating loops using Effects including EQ, Filters, Distortion, Compression, Lo-Fi (bitcrushing), and the Punish Control
  • Sequencing loops from single hits, and re-sequencing loops using the MIDI to Host function
  • Using Trigger FX keyswitches to stutter and apply effects on-the-fly
  • Using the Stage control to balance and create dynamic panning and stereo images within Percussive Kits
  • Gating sequences using the Amp Sequencer
  • Exporting sounds and integration into your own productions

This new and revolutionary product is a music for all producers from Minimal to full on film core composers. It's made a big difference to my workflow and with exclusive 1-2-1 training in person or via Skype, now is the time to see how Damage can make the difference for you too
